Seven persons were killed and one fishermen reported missing till today due to cyclone Nilam’ fury which battered Andhra Pradesh during the last few days. Commissioner for Disaster Management in a release here said Prakasam District accounted for four deaths while East Godavari, Guntur and Nellore districts one each. The fishermen was reported missing from Srikakulam district. The release said three persons died due to electrocution, equal number killed due to wall collapse and another drowned in local stream. In Prakasam district, 13 relief camps were opened and a total of 4,824 persons were accommodated in the camps since yesterday, the release said, adding 16 houses were fully or partly damaged in Anantapur district, two cows in Chittor district and five goats in Anantapur district died and 76,989 hectares of preliminary agriculture crops were damaged in the affected districts. The release said as per IMD Report today, the yesterday’s depression over south interior Karnataka and neighbourhood weakened into a well marked low pressure area over North Interior Karnataka and adjoining Rayalaseema. The system would further weaken gradually during the next 12 hours, the release said, adding under the influence of this system, rainfall at many places with isolated heavy rains would occur over Andhra Pradesh, South Chattisgarh, South Orissa during the next 24 hours. On the steps taken, the Disaster Management Commissioner said Control Room had been opened in the Secretariat and it functioned round the clock. Special officers had been appointed in Nellore, Prakasam and Chittoor districts.
