Law Minister Mr. Erasu Pratap Reddy today came down heavily on the Centre for taking ‘hasty steps’ towards formation of Telangana. During a press meet at Congress Legislature Party office here, Pratap Reddy thundered asking whether they are (Samaikyandhra protagonists) ‘untouchables’ or ‘Pakistanis’ to be kept away by the Centre in the process of bifurcation.
He reiterated that they will oppose the bifurcation process tooth and nail, once Telangana Draft Bill comes to the Assembly. Let the Assembly session begin and take up the issue, we will show our strength and discard it simply, as majority of MLAs are opposing the bifurcation, he said adding that the Centre cannot go ahead without our consent. We will have to ‘break our own heads’ if the Centre gives statehood to Telangana and ignore our plight, he said. He recalled that they have already brought their argument of united Andhra Pradesh to the notice of the Congress high command during its “Chinthan Baithak” (Brainstorming Session) held in 2009.
He asked the UPA led Congress Government to explain the rationale behind its hasty decision to accord statehood to Telangana at the cost of Rayalaseema region. Mere announcement making Hyderabad a joint capital for 10 years and giving national status to Polavaram will only compound the problem between the two states, he said.
Despite Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy expressing security concerns over bifurcation to the Group of Ministers, and an Intelligence Chief report on similar lines, the Centre seems to have hastened its process of finalizing the process in favor of Telangana, he bemoaned.
National parties like Bhartiya Janata party and the Congress have to give their mind to our dissent over bifurcation instead of giving a blind nod in favor of Telangana, he said. Warning that they will go up to any extent against the bifurcation, Prathap Reddy said that the Centre should not forget that the UPA Government came into existence only with their support. Let the Centre address the demands of backward Rayalaseema region first, and then do whatever it wanted to, he added.
Taking a dig at the opposition parties for making allegations against the Chief Minister, he said that they will support Kiran Reddy’s efforts against the division. The opposition parties should cooperate with the Samaikyandhra leaders to prevent the bifurcation process by mounting pressure on the Centre. Replying a query, he said that they will respect the sentiments of Telangana people, but not at the cost of their own people.
