Hyderabad, April 16 : Demanding that the State government immediately issue a GO on revision of wages for Beedi workers, the CITU-affiliated Andhra Pradesh Beedi and Cigar Workers’ Union has announced that they would organise a massive dharna at the State Labour Commissioner’s Office here on April 25.
Speaking to mediapersons here on Saturday, the Union president, Mr P Siddiramulu, and general secretary, Ms S Rama, alleged that the State government was conspiring to cheat the Beedi workers once again over revision of their wages. They pointed out that when they went on 32-day strike in November last year for revision of wages in conformity with the rising prices, the government issued a draft notification and delaying the process since the last four months on pretext of holding talks. They also alleged that the Congress government was “conspiring” to reduce the wages of Beedi workers in collusion with the managements-friendly workers unions leaders.
The Union leaders said as the life of the Beedi workers has become unbearable on account of spiraling prices of essential commodities, some six lakh workers of all categories went on strike from November 1 to December 2 last year. Responding to the indefinite strike, the State government issued draft notification GO Rt No. 1381 on revision of wages on November 30 and sought suggestions from all unions within two months, they added. Accordingly, all the unions submitted written suggestions and the higher officials of the Labour department held talks on March 9 and April 7 and assured that a final GO will be issued by end of March. As the government has failed to fulfill its promise, lakhs of Beedi workers were becoming restless, they added. (NSS)
