Hyderabad: The Congress High Command has decided to utilize the services of the Praja Rajyam Party chief, Mr K. Chiranjeevi, for its election campaigning in Tamil Nadu.

According to information, the party feels that the former megastar has influence on the voters of his state as several of his films were super hit in Tamil Nadu. The party felt that his services would be particularly useful in areas where there is considerable Telugu population.

Mr Chiranjeevi was a resident of Chennai before the Telugu film industry shifted to Hyderabad. Several of his films were dubbed into Tamil and has considerable fan following in that State.

The Congress party is contesting the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in an alliance with the ruling DMK party. Both the DMK and its opponent AIADMK led by former chief minister Ms Jayalalita are using film stars for their election campaigns. In this context, the Congress leadership believing that Mr Chiranjeevi would be very useful for its campaigning in the State, the party High Command has summoned the former hero to New Delhi. He is likely to have a meeting with the Congress president, Ms Sonia Gandhi, either on Monday or Tuesday. He would also meet with her Political Adviser, Mr Ahmed Patel.

A programme for Chiranjeevi’s campaign in Tamilnadu would be finalized in that meeting. The two might also discuss about the remaining formalities for the merger of PRP in Congress. Mr Chiranjeevi was planning a big public meeting to formalize its party’s merger. Ms Sonia Gandhi is likely to attend this meeting. It is learnt that the date for this public meeting would be finalized as per the convenience of Ms. Gandhi. (NSS)
