A decision on the resignation by 13 Andhra Pradesh MPs could be taken by the Lok Sabha Speaker, Ms Meira Kumar, between July 28 and 31. The Speaker will be on a foreign trip from Friday till July 28.
Of the 13 Lok Sabha Members from the state who have sent their resignations, nine belong to the Congress and two each from the TDP the TRS. All of them are from the Telangana region. The Speaker will ensure whether the MP is resigning under pressure, duress or of his own will. If the MPs meet Ms Kumar and press for the resignation saying that they are quitting on this issue, then the Speaker would have no choice but to accept it.
However, it is to be seen if the MPs can defy party line on the matter. The issue is also set to dominate Monsoon Session of Parliament beginning on August 1. The BJP, the TRS and the CPI are in favour of a Telangana state while the Congress, the TDP are divided. And the CPI(M) is opposing to division of Andhra Pradesh.
The Speaker is said to have called a meeting of floor leaders on July 31.
The current mood in the government is not to take any decision on this issue. This is because the trouble-shooters know that it cannot confine to Andhra Pradesh.
But the Congress is confident of a resolution of Telangana issue. However, it is keeping cards close to the chest on a formula which can solve the problem.
“Every problem has a solution,” viewed an AICC official who does not want to be quoted. The Congress alone cannot take a decision on this issue as every major party in Andhra Pradesh has been divided on this issue. Asian Age
