Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy here on Sunday vowed that he would transform the State capital into a world-class city and the Metro Rail project was a part of his government’s efforts to achieve the goal. He also unveiled a plaque, signalling the launch of the project.
Inaugurating the work to set up launching girders on to the Hyderabad Metro Rail pillars, the Chief Minister said the trials of the first phase of the Rs 16,375-crore project would begin in June 2014 and it would be dedicated to the nation by December that year. He formally started the hydraulic cranes for launching girders on the Metro pillars for the elevated rail project.
Addressing a public meeting at Uppal to mark the completion of two years in office, Kiran Kumar Reddy said that as he was born, studied and brought up in Hyderabad, he has a bounden duty to improve the city. He said the prestigious Metro system on three high density corridors would carry 15 lakh people every day.
Stating that his government was making all efforts to complete the project on schedule, he said that even if there was a delay of one day on the part of the government, we will have to pay a penalty of Rs 32 lakh and if the L&T delays commissioning of the project by one day, they will have to pay Rs 64 lakh,” he added.
Expressing his happiness over completing two years in office, the Chief Minister said that he was able to steer the State for two years successfully with the blessings of the party supremo Sonia Gandhi and cooperation extended by his ministers, party leaders and people of the State. He said that he was grateful to the Congress party for giving him a chance to rule the State. He also assured that he would bring Krishna waters to Hyderabad by December next year for drinking needs.
The Metro Rail works entered a crucial phase today with the launching works on girders.
N.V.S. Reddy, managing director of Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited, said the box type iron launching girder of about 34 metres and weighing 300 tons will be lifted using two hydraulic cranes of up to 150 tons each and erected on top of the two pillars. The works will be undertaken during night. He said the entire stretch of metro rail viaduct would be implemented in pre-cast segmental construction method to minimise the inconvenience to road users.
APCC president and Transport Minister Botcha Satyanarayana, several Union and State ministers were present. Uppal MLA Bandaru Raji Reddy, LB Nagar MLA D. Sudheer Reddy and others were also present. (NSS)
