An activist of Samaikhyandhra students’ Joint Action Committee (JAC) was injured when students clashed with Jai Andhra activists at the Freedom Fighters’ Bhavan on Sunday. Students under the aegis of the Samaikhyandhra JAC reached the Bhavan upon information that the BJP leaders were organising a meeting in support of bifurcation of the state and confronted them.
Despite the BJP leaders trying to prevent the students from gaining entry into the meeting hall, the angry students barged in and broke the furniture after tearing away the flexi banners at the hall. The attack led to angry reactions from the Jai Andhra activists who also retaliated. Both the groups indulged in a street fight for some time. Soon, police reached the venue and caned the agitators from both the sides.
In the melee, student JAC leader Sai Krishna sustained an injury on his face. Police rushed the student to the government hospital. Police took the leaders of both the groups into custody and shifted them to Krishnalanka police station.
BJP state executive member L Venkatarao, who organised the `Jai Andhra’ meeting, condemned the attack by the protagonists of Samaikhyandhra movement. “This is nothing but the curtailing of our right to free speech and expression of opinion on the issue of bifurcation,” he lashed out. He said they have every right to hold meetings in favour of bifurcation and vowed to organise more such meetings. TOI
