Kiran’s balancing act in Guntur

Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who is visiting Guntur district on Wednesday, is doing a balancing act so as not to antagonise various Congress groups. The CM, who was to fly back in the evening to Hyderabad, has decided to stay overnight to attend a dinner being hosted by MLC Rayapati Srinivas.

Sources said, since he would be attending a lunch hosted by minister Kanna Lakshminarayana, the CM doesn’t want to hurt the feelings of the powerful Rayapati family in the politically volatile district of Guntur. The CM was initially supposed to confine his tour to Guntur city only. However, rural development minister Dokka Manikya Varaprasad, a bete noire of Lakshminarayana, prevailed upon the Chief Minister to spend some time in the district.

So, a one-hour programme was added to the itinerary to enable the CM’s tour to Medikonduru village in Tadikonda constituency represented by Varaprasad. Guntur East legislator Mastan Vali too jumped into the scene and wanted the CM to visit the historical Markaz mosque in the Old Town and have an interaction with Muslim elders. “The CM cannot afford to displease minorities and Dalits. Hence, he has agreed to the requests from the minister and Mastan,” sources said.

After the lunch, CM would review developmental programmes and attend the local party workers’ meet. TOI
