Hyderabad: In view of the worsening health condition of Bhagwan Sri Satya Sai Baba, the Chief Minister, Mr N Kiran Kumar Reddy, on Thursday discussed the security arrangements in Puttaparthi with the Director General of Police and IG Intelligence.
Concerned over sinking health condition of the pontiff, the Chief Minister sought a brief on security arrangements from the DGP, Mr Aravind Rao. The DGP and Intelligence IG went to the Secretariat and apprised him of the security measures taken in Puttaparthi to tackle any situation. The DGP reportedly explained to the Chief Minister that law and order in Puttaparthi was completely peaceful and there was no need to worry about it. He also informed the Chief Minister that adequate number of police personnel were deployed in the spiritual town keeping in view the heavy influx of devotees there. Some 15 check-posts were set up on the roads leading to Puttaparthi, he added.
The Chief Minister reportedly instructed the DGP to remain alert and take all possible steps to ensure effective security to prevent any untoward incident. He also enquired with the Intelligence chief about the situation prevailing in Puttaparthi and throughout the State in the wake of worsening health condition of the Baba.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Mr Aravinda Rao said that the SP of the district was looking after the security arrangements. If required, additional police forces would be deployed there. Prohibitory order under 144 Cr P C was being imposed in the town keeping in view the tense situation. He said that he was unaware of forcible closure of shops and business establishments by the police in Puttaparthi. No such direction has been given to the police, he added.
On the news about the visit of the President and the Prime Minister to Puttaparthi, the DGP clarified that the police department had no information about the visit of VIPs to Puttaparthi.
The Minister for Revenue, Mr N Raghuveera Reddy, revealed that the health condition of Satya Sai Baba remained critical. The doctors were making all-out efforts to save the life of the ailing Baba. The Principal Secretary, Finance, Mr L V Subramanyam, and the Anantapur SP were supervising the situation in Puttaparthi, he added.
It may be mentioned here that Sri Sathya Sai Baba was in the hospital since March 28. Over 2,000 police personnel have been deployed in the town, especially at the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, where the godman was admitted. The 85-year-old Baba is one of the most popular spiritual leaders across the world. (NSS)
