Rationalists vs. Devotees over Sai Baba age

Hyderabad, April 30 (NSS): Sri Sathya Sai Baba was the main target to rationalists. By departing from this world, Baba left a battle between his devotees and bitter critics. As the world-famous godman Satya Sai Baba died at the age of 84 instead of his own prediction that he would die at the age of 96 years, now the rationalists are questioning the very Godmanship of Sri Satya Sai Baba. On the
other hand, the devotees were countering it by saying that as per Telugu calendar the present age of Baba is 96 years.

In Chapter 31 of “Sathya Sai Speaks” volume I, Satya Sai Baba said “I will be in this mortal human form for 59 years more and I shall certainly achieve the purpose of this Avatar — do not doubt it. I will take My own time to carry out My Plan so far as you are concerned. I cannot hurry because you are hurrying. I may sometimes wait until I can achieve ten things at one stroke; just as an engine is not used to haul one coach, but awaits until sufficient haulage in proportion to its capacity is ready. But My Word will never fail; it must happen as I will.” That would mean that Swami would give up His body at the age of 93 or 94, since He was born on November, 23 1926. But He gave up His physical form on April 24, 2011 (Easter Day) at 7.40 am at the age of 84. What is the explanation for this seeming discrepancy?

According to the explanation appeared in a website of Satya Sai International Organization, Baba has talked in lunar years, not calendar years. There are 12 lunar months in a lunar year. Several peoplehave given calculations showing that Swami was 94, 95, or 96 lunar years old when He left His body. Each of the calculations gives a different estimate of the number of days in a lunar month, and that is why there is a difference.

Here is a quick calculation. Swami lived 30,833 days. Lunar month’s average is 27.21 days (a number found on the internet, but it may not be correct), and there are 12 lunar months in a lunar year. Thus, Swami lived about 1133 lunar months, or 94.4 lunar years.

The other argument of the devotees of Satya Sai Baba was that there would be only 324 days per year in Telugu calendar instead of 365 days in English calendar and the age of Baba at the time of his death was exactly 96 years as per Telugu calendar as Baba said. (NSS)
