Eluru: Telugu Desam Party legislator Chintamaneni Prabhakar Rao from Denduluru in West Godavari district, facing charges of manhandling a district level officer from the Panchayat Raj Department, on Tuesday surrendered before the West Godavari district police.

According to reports, the DPO lodged a complaint with the police that a mob of protesters, led by mr Prabhakar Rao, barged into his residence, and assaulted him.

The alleged incident took place during a recent protest in connection with a case of empowering the Ankannagudem village sarpanch. The Sarpanch’s powers to sign cheques were withdrawn by the district Collector after allegations that he had misused funds were leveled.

Mr Prabhakar Rao intimidated DPO Varaprasada Rao, according to his complaint.

Pressure mounted on the police to act on the complaint against the MLA after the AP Panchayat Raj Officers’ Association launched a campaign on June 13, demanding Mr Prabhakar Rao’s arrest.

The Panchayat Raj Department employees, after keeping up the pressure for a week, on Monday had staged a demonstration in the city. The protestors had demanded the police higher ups to arrest the TDP MLA immediately.(INN)
