Warangal: The separate Telangana statehood movement lost one of its most capable generals on Tuesday after Telangana ideologue, and founder-member of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, Professor Kothapalli Jayashankar passed away due to cancer at his residence in Warangal, at the age of 76.
Professor Jayashankar had only recently been shifted to his hometown in Hanamkonda in Warangal after being discharged by the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology in Hyderabad.
Born on August 6, 1934 in Akkampeta in Atmakur mandal in Hanmakonda, Prof Jayashankar remained a bachelor.
A man respected not only for his educational background, (Prof Jayashankar completed his MA in Economics from the Banaras University) and Ph D in Economics and his B Ed from the Osmania University, but also for his ability to try to make his dream of a separate Telangana statehood into a near-reality.
Prof Jayashankar is largely seen as one of the main reasons that the Telangana statehood dream is on the verge of being realized, having fought for the separate state right through his life.
He started his fight for Telangana during his Intermediate student days, having walked out of the class in protest against the reorganization of the state in 1952.
As a young man, he submitted a comprehensive report to the Fazal Ali Commission in 1954.
His analytical approach to the problems faced by the people of Telangana and the reasons behind the backwardness of the region, backed by his ability to write well on the subject, sent many jitters down the spines of integrationists right through the years. He authorized articles and research papers on various aspects of Telangana in English and Telugu, backing his reasoning with arguments and points relating to the region’s history, education, employment, irrigation and culture.
Prof Jayashankar had time and again said that the discrimination and unequal distribution of water was the main reason behind the backwardness of Telangana and the root of the separate Telangana demand.
Prof Jayashankar served as Vice Chancellor of Kakatiya University from 1991 to 1994, besides serving as the Registrar of Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL), Hyderabad (1982–91), the Registrar of Kakatiya University, Warangal (1979–81), Principal of CKM College, Warangal (1975–79), on the Board of Governors of the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL), Hyderabad, on the Board of Governors of the Regional Engineering College, Warangal, on the Planning Board of the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala, was on the Search Committee for appointing the Vice Chancellor of CIEFL, was on the Board of Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education, besides many other important posts.
Professor Jayashankar’s body has been placed in the Ekashila Park to enable people to pay their respects. The last rites would be conducted at the Siva Mukti Dhamam in Hanmakonda, but the day and time has not been announced yet.
Meanwhile expressions of shock and grief have been flooding in from people of all walks of life, including leading politicians.(INN)
