Vijayawada, Guntur to be upgraded to mega cities

Hyderabad: Two proposals have been made to upgrade both Vijayawada and Guntur cities which are the capitals of Krishna and Guntur districts in Coastal Andhra region.

Municipal Administration Minister M Mahidhar Reddy told media persons at the Secretariat on Saturday that Department had received proposals, among others, to upgrade Vijayawada and Guntur as mega cities.

Megacity status to Vijayawada was not surprising as it had been the hub of activity as it offered a link between the North and South with a major railway junction of South Central Railways.

Mr Mahidhar Reddy however said that the Barrage on the Krishna River was cropping up as an irritant for development.

Prakasam Barrage one of the main attractions in Vijayawada offers a road bridge built across Krishna links Vijayawada and Guntur. Three canals run from it to all parts of city providing water for irrigation. It also works as a water regulator.

But the city is as famous for connectivity as for pilgrimage, tourism and commercial business. “In fact it is known as commercial capital of AP,” he said. Both the cities had been divided by the mighty Krishna River.

The Minister said they were also contemplating to bring the surrounding areas of Guntur under one umbrella for providing all facilities.

Guntur is also famous for trade particularly in tobacco, red chillies and turmeric.

It was made clear that the government has no shortage of funds particularly for sanitation, drinking water supply and roads but his ministry has been faced with man power problem for which the APPSC chairperson Rachel Chatterjee has been approached to provide manpower within three months.

“In case the APPSC does not meet the demand, the Municipal Administration has an alternative and that was to employ the college students directly,” Mr Mahidhar Reddy disclosed.

“Earlier also for enumeration work, polytechnic students were roped in to complete the survey,” he reminded.

In all, the Municipal Administration Department has received 52 proposals for upgrading the Panchayats and it has decided to upgrade 14 Panchayats so far, the Minister disclosed.

A decision to upgrade Chittoor, Ongole and Khammam as Corporations has been taken recently.

Besides this, the surrounding areas of Hyderabad like Ghatkesar, Medchal, Saroornagar, Rajendranagar etc would be upgraded periodically, he pointed out.

“The Municipal Administration Department is clear about the task ahead, but shortage of manpower is our major hindrance,” Mr Mahidhar Reddy said.(INN)
