Srikakulam: The Telugu Desam party president and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Mr Nara Chandrababu Naidu, here on Wednesday said that late chief minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy had achieved dubious distinction in converting fertile lands into waste lands and caused setting up of factories for his selfish interests.
The TDP supremo was speaking after consoling the injured and kin of those killed in police firing at Kakarapalle in the district on Monday. It may be mentioned here that two persons were killed and several injured while protesting against the resumption of construction work of the proposed 2640MW thermal power plant in Santabommali mandal in the district.
When the former chief minister arrived here this morning to console the victims of police firing, the fishermen and their families met him and narrated their tales of woe. Lambasting the Congress government’s style of functioning, the TDP leader declared that his party would fight against the proposed thermal plant on behalf of the villagers till the plant was shelved. He also challenged the Chief Minister, Mr N Kiran Kumar Reddy, or anybody in the Congress government, to visit Vattithandra if they had any guts.
Stating that the ruling party was shameless, the former chief minister said that there was no use of such a government. “Who gave the right to the government to shoot down the innocent people,” an emotionally surcharged Mr Naidu asked. He also demanded that the government uncover the people behind the power project.
Demanding that the State government go to the rescue of the victims, Mr Naidu demanded Rs 10 lakh ex gratia to the kin of the deceased and Rs 5 lakh compensation to each of the injured persons. Besides, he wanted the government to release all the agitators who were in judicial custody and take steps to render justice to the victimized people. (NSS)
