Half-centuries from Usman Khawaja and Ricky Ponting combined with a six-wicket haul by teenage debutant Pat Cummins will give Australia hope against South Africa on Monday.
Former captain Ponting resumes on 54 in Johannesburg, as the Aussies, 142 for three, chase 310 on the final day in a bid to level the two-match series 1-1.
Earlier, paceman Cummins took six for 79 as South Africa stumbled from 229 for three to 339 all out in their second innings.
Hashim Amla did complete his 14th Test century, but Cummins hauled the Aussies back into the contest. They still need 168 to win and much will depend on Ponting in possibly his final Test.
