Cameron White has been left out of Australia’s one-day squad for the tour of Sri Lanka, but he has been retained as captain of the Twenty20 team.
The 27-year-old struggled with the bat at the World Cup and the limited-overs series that followed against Bangladesh.
Chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch, though, is backing White to regain his form and regain his place in the ODI squad.
“Cameron White is unlucky to be omitted from the one-day squad having been a regular and successful member of the squad for the last few series,” said Hilditch.
“Cameron lost his position in the side during the recent one-day tour of Bangladesh but the selectors are confident that he will force his way back into the team through weight of runs.”
Shaun Marsh, who missed the World Cup due to a hamstring injury, and David Hussey return while James Pattinson, whose brother Darren played one Test for England, is named in both squads. There is also a recall for left-arm fast bowler Doug Bollinger following his return to full fitness.
“Shaun can open the batting but also provides flexibility throughout the order and gives the squad great balance,” said Hilditch.
He added: “Taking on the talented Sri Lankan team on their home soil in all forms of the game is always challenging but we also see it as an exciting opportunity for both the Twenty20 and one-day squads.”
Australia will play two Twenty20 matches, five ODIs and three Tests against Sri Lanka from August 6 to September 20.
