Having topped the run-scoring charts for the Mumbai Indians in 2009 and finished second only to Sachin Tendulkar in 2010, JP Duminy is looking to continue his rich run of form in the Indian Premier League for his new franchise this year.
Released by Mumbai and snapped up by the Deccan Chargers at January’s player auction, the South African batsman joins a host of star batsmen, including Kumar Sangakkara, Michael Lumb and Cameron White, in their bid to repeat the success that brought the Hyderabad-bred side the IPL title in 2009.
“The minute I walk on to the park, I will try and give my best for the team. Individual performance is always a factor and I hope to turn in a good show for the Hyderabad crowd,” Duminy told Deccan’s official website.
“I’ve had decent success in T20 cricket in India. I didn’t play all the games for Mumbai Indians last year but when I did, I contributed fairly well.
“I set myself short-term and long-term goals and once I reach them, I keep raising the bar. One can never be satisfied with one’s achievements. There are always bigger things to come. Hopefully, this season will be one of them. I will give it my best.”
With 78 ODIs, 12 Tests and 30 Twenty20 Internationals to his name, the 26-year-old enters the Mumbai fold as somewhat of a senior statesman.
The Chargers squad is lined with rookies, with Ashish Reddy, Anand Rajan, Ankit Sharma, Akash Bhandari, Bharat Chipli and typifying the inexperienced nature of their Indian contingent.
“There are quite a few youngsters who are part of the set-up, so I know the kind of role I have to play along with the other seniors in our squad. I am looking forward to it. I am sure there are a couple of guys who might look up to me in certain ways,” he added.
“The strength lies in the team spirit. It seems like a big family, which is nice to be part of. We’ve got a great coach in Darren Lehmann and the support staff is a great squad to work with as well.
“Obviously as a team, the goal will be to win the IPL and I think we definitely have the squad to go all the way. It’s just about finding the momentum.”
