Shaun Marsh relishing Punjab role

The Kings XI Punjab are developing into an increasingly more potent batting unit with Shaun Marsh the finding his touch with a match-winnings innings against Rajasthan on Thursday.

The men from Punjab presently sit third in the IPL table, and travel to the Feroz Shah Kotla for a clash against bottom-of-the-pile Delhi on Saturday with their batting armoury presently the most dangerous in the competition.

Marsh scored 71 against the Royals to secure a comfortable victory – the Kings XI’s third in as many games – with the 27-year old smashing compatriot Shane Warne for three sixes in one particular over.

“I wasn’t thinking about it too much,” said Marsh after the game. “I just thought if it’s in my area, I’ll have a go at it. I was lucky, a few overs before, that the ball landed short of fielders.”

The Western Australian added: “Just when I had come in to bat, I tried to play the same shot and it landed just before the fielders. I guess it was my night.”

Named the man-of-the-match, Marsh praised the performances of his opening pair Paul Valthaty and Adam Gilchrist for their scintillating starts so far this season, and Delhi will be very weary of the threat posed by the Punjab top three come Saturday’s encounter.

“Paul (Valthaty) is batting unbelievably well at the moment and Adam (Gilchrist), too,” said Marsh. “I’ve been playing my natural game at No. 3 and it easier when the team gets off to a flying start.”

More used to opening the batting himself, the Australian added: “It’s different (not opening the innings), but something that I’m enjoying. I have batted down the order for Western Australia and also for Australia. It’s all about what suits the team best.”

The left-hander also hailed the influence of skipper Gilchrist.

“We have been working really hard to generate team spirit. We are led very well by Adam who gets the guys fired up and ready to go out in the field with confidence. We’re lucky to have him as our leader.” Cricket365
