Nagpur, Feb 11 (IANS) New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori Friday said their experience of playing in India and Bangladesh last year will come in handy during the World Cup beginning Feb 19.
Vettori admitted that their woeful run in the ODI series, which began in Sri Lanka last year, has affected the team’s morale but said their last two ODI wins against Pakistan has given the team confidence. The Black Caps lost the series but the wins broke their 11 match losing streak
They had a forgettable run in the sub-continent, where they were blanked by Bangladesh and India.
“We have been playing in the sub-continent for some time and that has helped us gain more experience,” Vettori said here on eve of their warm up match against Ireland.
“Defeats have affected our morale, but the wins against Pakistan have restored our confidence.”
The team is drawing inspiration from the presence of new coach John Wright, a former India coach.
“John is an important asset for us. He has vast experience, knowledge of local conditions, crowd and people and therefore is a good coach for New Zealand,” said Vettori.
New Zealand play their first match against Kenya at Chennai Feb 20.
