For most of the people in Sri Lanka it was a shock to see their national cricket team emerge second best at the ICC World Cup 2011.

Although the Sri Lankan team was in a better position to win the match, having won the toss and batted first, putting up a challenging score of 274 for 6, the media in Sri Lanka have given a mixed response to the Sri Lanka’s defeat at the hands of India.

Some of the news papers came down heavily on the team selectors- stating various reasons like the redundancy of including a half-fit Murlitharan while others criticized the inclusion of Suraj Rajiv at the expense of Ajantha Mendis.

Some of the papers opined that Sri Lanka had an easier passage to the finals than India, but India are the deserving winners, that needs to be given all the accolades for the well deserved victory. Agencies
