New Delhi, March 5 (IANS) Chivalry pays — and two Mumbai-based conmen had a unique way of demonstrating that. They used to fly down to Delhi twice a month, dress as police officers, and sweet-talked women into keeping their jewellery in a bag they provided for safekeeping. Of course, on reaching home, the victim would find that the bag which the gentlemanly cops returned to her did not have her jewellery at all.
Sartaz Ali, 50, and Sheru Hussain, 35, were arrested Friday from south Delhi, a police officer said Saturday.
“They would provide the bag themselves and would engage the victim in talk before replacing the original one with a similar bag containing fake jewellery. They would especially target senior citizens,” the police officer added.
According to police, the duo, accompanied by their other accomplices, would travel by air and stay in hotels in Nizamuddin in south Delhi and Paharganj in central Delhi.
After committing the crimes, they would return to Mumbai. Sartaj returned by train along with the looted articles. The gang would roam all over India and commit such crimes.
“We have recovered gold bangles, rings and a motorcycle,” the police officer said.
