In a gruesome incident, an engineering student beheaded a teenaged girl on St Xavier’s College campus on Wednesday afternoon before he was overpowered and taken into custody. Although Brijendra Kumar, a resident of Sonari in Jamshedpur, refused to say anything about his motive to kill Khusboo Kumari, an affair between the two is suspected to be the reason behind the daylight murder.
Khusboo, who lived at Tupudana in Ranchi to pursue her education from Ravindra Nath Tagore Inter College in Hatia, came to St Xavier’s College to sit for her intermediate examination. Witnesses said the boy was waiting with a dagger for the teen to come out of the exam hall.
“As soon as Khusboo came out of the hall around 4.45pm, he rushed to the girl wielding a dagger, grabbed her and beheaded her within seconds. He kept the sharp weapon hidden in his back. On hearing the scream, college guards rushed to the spot and raised the alarm seeing the headless body lying in a pool of blood,” a student of the college said.
Expressing shock over the incident, St Xavier’s College principal Father Nicolas Tete said since the examinations were on, outsiders were allowed on the campus. He said the girl was usually accompanied to the college by her grandmother.
“I was told that this afternoon the boy also accompanied them and had a heated argument with her on the college campus just before the examination,” the principal said, adding that if a complaint would have been lodged with the college, the assailant could have been prevented from entering the institution.
