New Delhi, March 24 (IANS) Another member of the over dozen-strong gang that stole the entire stock of jewellery worth over Rs.10 crore (Rs.100 million/approx $2.2 million) from a Chandigarh showroom two months ago has been arrested, police said Thursday. He is the eleventh to be arrested.
“Surinder, who hails from Sikhera village in Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh) was held from Anand Vihar bus depot in east Delhi,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Arun Kampani.
During interrogation, Surender told police that he was hiding in Panchali village near Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut city after the Jan 11 heist when the robbers wearing police uniforms broke into the Tanishq showroom in Chandigarh’s Manimajra area and took away all the jewellery.
Till now police have apprehended ten people.
On Jan 15, Chandigarh Police apprehended the kingpin Paras Soni, 26, his brother Manav Soni, 24, Bhura Qureshi, 28, Upender Singh, 19, Anuj Kumar, 21, Ajay Singh, 24, Bhura Tomar, 18 and Sonu Raghav, 19 from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Harjinder Singh alias Jonty was arrested from Punjab’s Ferozepur town Jan 18 and Nadeem, 23, was arrested from Delhi on Jan 21.
With Surinder’s arrest, only two more gang-members – Ali Raja and Umar Duraj – are absconding.
The gang had also looted a mobile phone showroom in Kundli Jan 3 from where they robbed 1,000 handsets worth around Rs.1 crore (Rs.10 million).
