Mumbai: The major fire that raged through a slum in Behrampada near Bandra on Friday night also gutted the homes of the child actors of Oscar-winning film ” Slumdog Millionaire” Azharuddin and Rubina, reports Times of India.
Apart from two people taken to hospital with breathing problems due to the smoke, no other casualties were reported in the fire in Gareeb Nagar slum, adjacent to the Bandra railway station, police said.
The blaze broke out at around 8.30 p.m. and quickly spread through the dense hutments. A total of 15 fire tenders were struggling to extinguish the blaze as of 10.45 p.m.As the fire was near the railway station, the Central Railway has partially curtailed operations on its Harbour Line.
Azharuddin and Rubina, who played the roles of the protagonists in their childhood, used to live in this very slum until they moved out after homes were arranged for them by the “Slumdog..” crew.Several other children, who played bit roles in the movie, still stay in the slum.
Rubina told media persons that she and her family slept in the open on Friday night on a ‘chatai’ (bamboo mat) as their home was gutted. Her guardian said it would take nearly a month for the family to shift to their new accomodation, as it was not yet ready.TOI
