She is a beauty with the brain, indeed, as was evident from the composed manner in which Hasleen Kaur, Femina Miss India Earth 2011, answered all the questions thrown at her.
In Vadodara for a promotional event, Hasleen interacted with the students, happily posed for the cameras and then engaged in a lengthy chat session with TOI. Excerpts:
Beauty with a purpose:
My father was in the army, while my mother was into academics. Initially I wanted to become a doctor, but my ambitions kept changing as I grew up. I studied commerce, and then did English Honors because I love reading books. I was pretty good with fancy words and catchy taglines, and had I not won the beauty pageant, I would have been working in some ad agency today. My parents have always given me the freedom to take my own decisions, and even when I have faltered, I have learnt from my mistakes. After winning a beauty pageant, the sudden surge of good offers and all the media exposure can be distracting if you don’t focus well. Right now, I am preparing to the best of my ability, as I will be representing India at the Miss Earth contest. Nicole Faria’s win last year was inspiring and I want to do my country proud again.
Even though I played a small role in Love Aaj Kal, it was a wonderful experience to be part of a film starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. It happened at a time when I had just started modeling and I got to learn a lot about the various camera angles and how to express myself in front of the camera. And well, Imtiaz Ali is such a genius. He handled everything so well in the midst of extreme chaos on the sets! Besides, I had also gone for the auditions of Dev D and had been offered the role of Chanda (the one eventually played by Kalki Koechlin). But I was studying at that time and couldn’t take it up. Looking back, I have mixed feelings. Obviously, I often wonder where it would have taken me had I done that film, especially since it became such a cult movie. However, I believe more opportunities will certainly come my way.”
I wake up early, and then have fresh lauki juice. However, I am a huge foodie and gorge on all delicious food items and curd, ghee and buttermilk. To compensate for that, I work out a lot on a daily basis. I also love swimming and make it a point to swim as often as I can.
That funny rumor!
I was just 20, and had just participated in a fashion show organized by a leading designer. One of the models came up to me and congratulated me on getting married. It felt weird! Till date, I don’t know who spread that nasty rumor about me.
Another side to me:
I have this dream of starting my own business some day. I also love associating myself with NGOs and participate in fund-raising activities because they do a lot of quality work for the needy.TOI
