Hyderabad: The government has decided to plant over 20 lakh saplings on a single day as part of its afforestation efforts, with Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy leading the way by launching the 62nd ‘Vanamahotsavam’ at Medpally near Uppal on July 9.

Forest Minister Shatrucharla Vijayarama Rao told media persons at the Secretariat on Monday that the government is very much concerned over the depleting forest cover and decided to work for afforestation.

At present, the forests are limited to over 70 lakh hectares but it should still spread to another 20 lakh hectares according to national forest norms.

Last year in July, 10 lakh saplings were planted under the aegis of Acharya N G Ranga Agriculture University.

This year the Forest Department, with the cooperation of all other Departments, public representatives, farmers and NGOs, has planned to plant 20 lakh saplings.
