Hyderabad: The Chief Minister Mr. N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, in order to strengthen the medical education system in the State, approved the proposal of the department of medical education to convert all 397 posts of Civil Assistant Surgeons in the Government teaching Hospitals as Assistant Professors. The additional recurring expenditure is about Rs.11.35 crores per annum.
The Department informed the Chief Minister that the faculty positions in various departments of Medical Colleges/Teaching Hospitals are governed by the norms prescribed by the Medical Council of India. The workload of the Departments increased many fold. To cater the increased workload, additional posts were created and they were designated as Civil Assistant Surgeons.
It may be stated here that it was the usual practice in the Department to shift the Assistant Professors who had completed the mandatory 5 years teaching experience in the specialty to these posts of Civil Assistant Surgeons and give a chance to others with required Post Graduate qualification in the specialty to commence the teaching experience by posting them as Assistant Professors.(NSS)
