All those who have been awaiting their Aadhaar numbers for the last several months will have to wait for another four months.
The deputy director general of the Unique Identification Authority of India, Hyderabad Region, Mr V.S. Bhaskar, says the backlog will be cleared only by December.
“Though we have been increasing capacity from time to time, we have been facing various issues,” he said.
Mr Bhaskar was present at the launch of the first Aadhaar enrolment centre in Hyderabad by the Department of Posts at the GPO, Abids, on Thursday.
Andhra Pradesh leads the country in Aadhaar enrolments with over 2.5 crore of the 4.5 crore people enrolled across the country.
The Department of Posts will speed up enrolments in Hyderabad.
“We have started in Hyderabad with a centre in the General Post Office and more will be launched in seven other post offices in the next few days,” said the post master general (Business Development), Ms K. Sandhya Rani.
The Postal department will set up Aadhaar centres at Sanathnagar, Customer Service Centre at Pattargatti, Uppal, Begumpet, Himmatnagar and Jamai Osmania.
According to Ms Rani, the department has delivered 31,01,195 Aadhaar letters across the State including 13,01,427 in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts.
The department is making efforts to deliver the letters across the state, even working on Sundays and holidays, she said. Deccan Chronicle
