Hyderabad: The Rajya Sabha member, Dr K.V.P. Ramachander Rao, who was a close confidant of late chief minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, seems to be emerging as a strong contender to take the reins as president of the State Congress.
According to informed sources, the Congress High Command, which is seriously worried about the goings-on in the State administration and the party organization, is seriously considering to hand over the reins of the APCC president to Dr Ramachander Rao in place of the present incumbent, Mr D. Srinivas.
There is no denial of the fact that the ruling party as well as the government in the State have been facing rough weather ever since the sudden and tragic demise of Dr Rajasekhara Reddy. Despite changing two chief ministers there was no change in the turbulent situation in the State.
Now, the Kiran Kumar Reddy Cabinet is a divided house with the ministers hailing from his home district trying to pull the mat from underneath each other. In fact, Mr Kiran Kumar Reddy’s position is like that of a class teacher who has no control over his undisciplined students. As if this was not enough, the Jagan factor has become a new thorn in the flesh for the ruling party. And the massive victory of YSR Congress Party, floated by Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, in the recent by-elections in Kadapa has shattered the image of the Congress.
All these developments forced the Congress High Command to launch a damage control exercise in order to not only to salvage the image of the State Congress party, but also to steady the rocking Kiran Kumar Reddy boat. The appointment of a new PCC chief is one of the measures being contemplated as part of this exercise.
Though a number of senior leaders like ministers, Mr Botsa Satyanarayana, Mr Kanna Laxminarayana and Mr Ponnala Laxmaiah and the former minister, Mr Shabbir Ali, have come into the view of the High Command for consideration as the new PCC Chief, there were reservations about their ability to take all sections from all the regions on one platform. After taking into account various aspects, the High Command seemed to have zeroed on Dr K.V.P. as “suitable choice” under present circumstances.
It may be mentioned here that as a close confidante of late YSR under whose regime he worked as Political Advisor to the government, Dr KVP wielded tremendous influence on the ministers and legislators. Besides, he developed a good rapport with all sections within the party and the government. Moreover, he also had a close proximity with Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy. Thus, all these factors seem to have influenced the High Command to seriously consider KVP as the new PCC Chief in the present situation, though there were also allegations that he had virtually been a power centre during the late YSR regime.
