Hyderabad: MIM floor leader in the Assembly, Akbaruddin Owaisi had to pay a heavy price for the campaign he had launched to identify illegally encroached government and Wakf land in his Chandrayangutta constituency for public use.

According to government sources, the MLA had marked out such properties in at least half-a-dozen localities in his segment and persuaded the revenue and GHMC officials to get them cleared of encroachments. “This obviously did not go well with the land sharks. They tried to stop him through intermediaries but Akbaruddin said that the poor and the homeless needed those land more than those in the real estate business. During some visits to the constituency with the MLA, we could see his enthusiasm and public support to him,” a senior GHMC official said.

MIM sources said that at one particular locality, Akbaruddin had identified 70 acres that was illegally occupied. He had proposed to the government to build houses for the displaced and homeless there.

Hyderabad MP and MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi said that to say that Akbaruddin was running this campaign against an individual or a group is baseless. “The government wanted to move out some poor families from their homes saying that they were built on government land. It wanted to allot them units away from their locality. Akbar said when there is government land in the same neighborhood, why should they be sent to far off places. That’s one of the reasons why he identified encroached government land. The other one was to create public utilities like parks, schools, function-halls etc which the Old City lacks,” he said.

“We are trying to be patient against all kinds of provocations and applying democratic means to keep the city peaceful. If we don’t do that, Hyderabad could become another faction-ridden violent region in the state,” the MP cautioned.

He said the government and police should gauge the public mood in the wake of attack on Akbaruddin and take stringent action against the assailants. TOI
