Hyderabad: A marathon walk will be held on May 31 in the city to sensitize the people about the ill-effects of consumption of tobacco, in connection with the ‘World Anti-Tobacco Day”.
Informing this to media persons in the Secretariat here, the Minister for Health, Dr D L Ravindra Reddy said that the marathon would start at 8.30 am on May 31 from Necklace Road. Similarly, an anti-tobacco seminar would be conducted at 10 am in the Ravindra Bharathi here. In addition to this, efforts would be made to create awareness in the public through pamphlets and posters, he added.
He also underlined the need to give more publicity to the legislation banning smoking in public places. Within 100 yards distance from the educational institutions, there was ban on sale of tobacco related products. , he added.
Underlining the need to educate the people about the ill-effects of smoking, Dr Ravindra Reddy reminded that there were various types of consumption of tobacco like smoking, chewing tobacco etc. In Srikakulam district, the people smoke the cigars from the side of fire. It was most dangerous. In the rural areas, 25 percent of people are chewing tobacco and 30 percent of them are getting oral cancer, he added.
“I am also a smoker before 1990. But after knowing the ill- effects of smoking, I stopped the habit”, he added. (NSS)
