Hyderabad, Feb.20 (NSS): The TDP President, Mr Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday assured that his party would strive for 50 percent political reservation to women in local bodies and give seats to the Telugu Mahila members, who were capable to win the coming local bodies lections.

Speaking a function here when former MLA Ms Shoba Hymavathi took oath as Telugu Mahila State President in NTR Trust Bhavan here, Mr Naidu said that it was only TDP that worked for empowerment of women in the state. The TDP founder late N T Rama Rama Rao had encouraged women to come into politics in the state, and then only the role of women in state politics was increased. Late NTR has also set up the Padmavathi University at Tirupathi exclusively for women and strove to improve the literacy levels among the women.

The TDP Chief has also pointed out that the erstwhile TDP Government had provided 33 percent reservation to the women in education and employment sectors. It has also provided job opportunities to women in APSRTC as Conductors and now large number of women were working in RTC. The Deepam scheme, under which LPG connections issued to BPL households, has brought a significant change in kitchens of every house even in the rural areas, he pointed out.

Mr Naidu regretted that the concept of DWCRA Groups has been diluted by the present government. Due to this, the Micro Finance Institutions were exploiting the women particularly in rural areas, he reminded. He alleged that the failure of the Government in controlling the prices of essential commodities has become a curse to the middle class families in the state.

He strongly criticized the Congress Government for encouraging liquor business by setting targets to the excise department. The Government has also failed to prevent illegal belt shops in the state. The Congress Government has turned “Andhra Pradesh” as “Madyandhrapradesh” (state of liquor), he deplored.

The TDP Chief exhorted the Telugu Mahila members to tour the villages and know the local issue instead of making rounds to NTR Trust Bhavan. The party would give tickets to the Telugu Mahila leaders, who had chances of winning, in the local body elections.(NSS)
