Hyderabad: Expressing concern over suicides of farmers in the State, the former Union Minister and BJP senior leader, Mr Bandaru Dattatreya, has said that the State government’s negligent attitude was the main cause for farmer’s suicides. He demanded that the State government announce Rs 5 lakh ex gratia to the bereaved families of farmers.

Speaking to the media at the State BJP office here on Sunday, Mr Dattatreya said the Chief Minister, Mr N Kiran Kumar Reddy, claims to be pro-farmer, but in practice, he was only confined to statements. He alleged that the newly-introduced scheme ‘Sagu Rythu Rakshana Hastam’ has become a big farce to the farmers. He said that the State government has announced that it would issue identity cards only to 5.42 lakh tenant farmers though it had recognized 28 lakh tenant farmers. He said that in the State there were 40 lakh tenant farmers. He criticized the government’s attitude for not issuing the cards even to one lakh tenant farmers. The tenant farmers who received identity cards were vexed as the banks denied loans and driving them towards committing suicides, he regretted.

Demanding that the State government convene an all-party meeting to discuss the steps to be taken to solve the problems of the farmers immediately instead of holding review meetings again and again with the officials, he said that the State government has to understand the situation of the farmers in East Godavari district, who announced ‘Crop Holiday’ this year in 16 mandals and transformed into migratory labourers. He said that the BJP Kisan Morcha would organize ‘Rythu Sadassulu’ in the Coastal districts.

Condemning the letter addressed by the CPI State secretary, Dr K Narayana, to the Chief Minister asking him to delete the rule that states that the Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam (TTD) appoint only Hindus as its employees immediately, Mr Dattatreya said that Dr Narayana’s letter was injuring sentiments of Hindus. He said the government’s intervention in Hindu temples itself was against the spirit of secularism. He reminded that the Constitution advocates the government not to intervene in the religious matters. He asked Dr Narayana as to why he was not speaking about the issues related to other religions.

Stating that stories against Matadhipathis, Peetadhipathis, Sadhus, Sants and Swamijis in the media were painful, Mr Dattatreya said the stories were meant to damage sentiments of crores of Hindus. He dared the media to write such stories against other religious gurus if it had guts.

Warning that the Congress party would pay heavy price for its delay tactics on Telangana issue, the former Union Minister said it would not be possible to influence the 4.5 crore Telangana people like it was trying to influence its ministers, MPs and MLAs. He said that the BJP would organize awareness programmes on policies adopted by the Congress and TDP on Telangana issue on August 5, 6 and 7 in different places across Telangana region.
