Hyderabad: The TDP chief Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu has claimed that it was due to his party’s fight that the wages of the Beedi workers were raised by the government.
In a statement here on Friday, Mr. Naidu has said the beedi workers were leading miserable lives with low wages, high labour, poverty, ill-health and raise of prices of essential commodities. He said the government had at last come down and increased the wages of the workers due to the protracted fight of the labour unions under the leadership of the TDP.
Leaders of different labour unions have felicitated Mr. Naidu in the NTR Trust Bhavan, for cooperating in their fight for enhanced wages.
Addressing the workers, Mr. Naidu has said it was not enough if the government simply issued the GO. He said the fight should continue until the GO was implemented. He has reminded them that during the TDP regime, his government has given lot of importance for the welfare of the beedi workers. It was his party which fought against the decision of the Congress government to insist on the skull warning sign on beedi packets. Stating that 10 lakh worker, mostly women depended on the beedi industry, he has recalled the welfare schemes his government had implemented for women. Mr. Naidu has assured the Beedi workers that his party would fight in the Parliament for enhancement of the pension for the beedi workers from the present Rs. 70-Rs. 300 to Rs. 1,500.
Mr. Naidu has also claimed that it was due to the efforts of the TDP that the Singareni Collieries which was on the verge of closure was rejuvenated.

V Krishna, General Secretary Mr. M Narender and others have participated in the progamme.
