Hyderabad: The Chief Minister, Mr N Kiran Kumar Reddy, today directed the officials of the Irrigation Department to prepare a comprehensive report about the latest position regarding the progress of Indira Sagar Polavaram Project and Dr B.R. Ambedkar Pranahitha-Chevella Sujala Sravanthi. The Chief Minister asked the officials to go ahead with the preliminary works of both the Projects simultaneously and said that he would take up with the Government of India to get both the Projects declared as National Projects.
The Chief Minister held a review meeting on both the Projects with the Minister and officials at Secretariat. The Chief Minister asked the officials to go ahead with the Pranahitha-Chevella and Polavaram Projects which are already under different stages of progress. Officials informed the Chief Minister that as far as the Pranahitha-Chevella project was concerned, all the works are divided into 28 packages, agreements are concluded for all 28 packages during 2007-08 and 2008-09. Field investigation works for main canal and tunnels are completed in most of the packages and all design works are in progress.
The officials explained to the Chief Minister that the Pranahitha-Chevella Project contemplates to provide irrigation facilities for a command area of 16,40,000 acres in the drought prone areas in the seven districts of Adilabad, Karimnagar, Nalgonda, Medak, Niazamabad, Mehboobnagar and Ranga Reddy District. The Project will also provide 10 TMC of drinking water to the villages en route. It will also provide 30 TMC of driking water to twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunerabad and 16 TMC of Industrial water.
Officials informed the Chief Minister that as per the Godavari Water Distribution Tribunal report dated 6-10-1975, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh have agreed to take up 3 projects: Lendi Project, Lower Penganga and Pranahitha-Chevella at appropriate times. The Lower Penganga and Lendi Projects are already under execution and the Pranahitha-Chevella is now being taken up.
As far as Polavaram Project is concerned, the components are Spillway including gates, Earth cum rock fill dam (3 gaps) approach and spill channels, Power Block (foundation excavations, civil works, hydro-mechanical and electro-mechanical works). Under Package I, Irrigation and CAD department will take up spillway including gates, earth cum rock fill dam approach and spill channels and Power Block (foundation excavations). Under Package II, APGENCO will call for and execute tender for civil works of power house excluding foundation excavation of power block, hydro-mechanical and electro-mechanical works of power block.
The Minister for Major and Medium Irrigation, Mr P Sudarshan Reddy, the Special Chief Secretary to CM, Mr J Satyanarayana, the Principal Secretary, Irrigation, Mr S.K. Joshi, the Secretary, Irrigation, Mr Adityanath Das, the Principal Secretary, Energy, Mr Suthirtha Bhattacharya, The APGENCO Managing Director, Mr Vijayanand, the Secretary to CM, Mr K.S.
