Hyderabad: The Telugu Desam Legislature Party deputy leader, Mr Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu, has alleged that the Congress government was plundering the people with punitive taxes and looting the State through corrupt activities.

In a statement here on Thursday, Mr Naidu said that it was nothing short of cheating on the part of the government to have increased electricity charges on all sections of the consumers by Rs 650 crores within an year of hiking the power tariff for the industrial and commercial consumers by Rs 3,678 crores. He said that while the former chief minister, Mr Rosaiah, had imposed taxes of Rs 7,000 crores during his seven-month tenure, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy has imposed Rs 650 crores in four months. He said that the property tax in the municipalities was being hiked from Friday. He said the people would not be able to bear the additional power charges as they were already burdened with increased prices of all commodities.

Mr Naidu has said that the government was not as much interested in power generation as it was in the revenue. He claimed that while the TDP, during its rule, had established power generation capacity of 5,000 megawatt, the present government could increase it only by 1732 MW. He has claimed that it was due to the reforms the TDP government had implemented during its nine year rule, that the Congress government could give free power to the farmers.

The TDLP deputy leader said that the Congress had done nothing new during the past seven years. He said the power sector got debilitated because of lack of foresight and proper planning on the part of the government. He said the Congress party which criticized the then TDP government for power cuts was now not in a position to supply power for the Rabi crop, he said. He criticized that there was no response from the government for the agitations of farmers who were worried about Rabi crop. (NSS)
