Congress wary on Jagan probe

The ruling Congress is likely to tread carefully regarding the full-fledged CBI probe into the Kadapa MP, Mr Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s assets.

Party managers, both at the Centre and the state, have, however, decided to go all out against the YSR Congress chief despite the process leading to tarnishing of the image of Congress’ once trophy Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy.

While the Rosaiah government was in a dilemma over distancing itself from the YSR legacy which was loaded with populist schemes like free power and Rs.2 kilo rice, the present government under Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy is under no such compulsions.

“The core strength of Jagan is his father. Congress cannot afford to lose ground which Jagan is trying to gain on YSR’s image,” a senior Congress leader pointed out.

According to sources, party leaders have explained to the high command that any adverse impact of the CBI probe would only be on a few persons who had called the shots in YSR’s regime and became insignificant after his death. There is also a possibility of one or two ministers and a host of officials, who held high posts in the past, being exposed in the investigation.

There is, however, a difference of opinion among the party managers regarding the arrest of the Kadapa MP. A senior leader in control of party affairs even tried to caution the high command against rushing Mr Jagan’s arrest as the party is unsure of public reaction.

He advocated using the findings of the probe to tarnish Jagan’s image rather than taking the risk of arresting him.

Significantly, Nellore MP Mr M. Rajamohan Reddy, who is vociferous in support of Mr Jagan, has already announced that YSR’s wife Mrs Vijayalakshmi would go to the people and seek justice against the “vendetta” that the Congress has unleashed against her husband and son. Deccan Chronicle
