One affected resident tried to commit suicide while scores of others made vain bids to prevent the GHMC officials, who launched an “Operation Demolision” of illegal buildings in Anjaiahnagar and Sadiqnagar in Gatchibowli on Monday morning.
The GHMC is stated to have identified as many as 150 illegal constructions allegedly on government land in the area. Claiming that despite notices the residents have not vacated the houses, the officials launched a massive demolition operation.
As soon as the officials descended on the area with heavy contingents of armed policemen and began pulling down the multistoried structures with the help of heavy machinery, the residents began to protest and tried to prevent the demolitions.
Even as the residents and the GHMC officials grappled with each other leading to a tense situation in the area, one of the affected residents doused himself with kerosene and tried to set himself ablaze. However, the police and local people intervened and foiled his attempt.
As many as 20 huge buildings were brought down by noon even as the residents began loud protests. They claimed that they had been living in the houses for many years after paying their hard-earned money to the builders. Some of them claimed that they even had sold their agriculture lands to buy the houses.
The local people were aghast over the GHMC awakening suddenly and claiming that the houses were constructed on government land. They wondered what the officials were doing all these years when the multi-storied structures were coming up. The officials claimed that they have not taken any action on those residents, who had secured stay orders from the courts. (NSS)
