A single day’s bandh, according to the senior vice-president of the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Mr Devendra Surana, costs the city’s industries around Rs 530 crore.
Thus with 17 bandhs last year, the losses amounted to Rs 9,010 crore.
“The manufacturing sector faced an estimated production loss of Rs 300 to Rs 350 crore during a single day’s bandh. The cost of loss of supply chain would be around Rs 150 to Rs 180 crore a day. Exports have taken a hit by Rs 60 crore,” Mr Surana added.
The industry body prepared the estimates of production loss on the basis of the drop in the daily power consumption.
“The city consumes around 1,200 megawatts of power on a normal day. However, during a shutdown, the consumption dips by 300 to 400 MW, representing around 30 per cent loss in production,” said Mr M.V. Rajeshwara Rao, secretary general of Fapcci. Deccan Chronicle
