Ten days after TRS politburo leader and former Maoist Sambasivudu was killed at Gokaram village in Valigonda mandal on March 26 night, police cracked the murder mystery by arresting five members of a hired-killer gang. However, the main accused, Nayeemuddin, a former Maoist, continues to be at large.

Among the arrested include former naxalite Chiluka Raju alias Suresh. The gang was paid Rs 5 lakh by Nayeemuddin for carrying out the murder. Along with Suresh, Amar, Rajesh, Srikanth and Sridhar Goud were produced before the media here on Tuesday. The gang was detained near Choutuppal and later cops interrogated them.

Sources said the gang had planned to bump off Sambasivudu twice but failed. In February, they missed the `target’ by a whisker during a Telangana Dhoom-Dham programme at L B Nagar in Hyderabad. Again, during the rail roko agitation on March 1 at L B Nagar, the gang attempted to kill Sambasivudu but failed.

According to district SP Rajesh Kumar, the gang led by Suresh struck a `deal’ with Nayeem for Rs 5 lakh to eliminate Sambasivudu. The gang, which took shelter at Durganagar in Chintalkunta in Hyderabad, observed Sambasivudu’s movements in the last couple of months. “They waited for the opportune time. They waylaid and attacked Sambasivudu’s car when he was returning from a Dhoom-Dham programme at Sangem village. They hacked him mercilessly,” a police official said.

The SP said there were 12 accused in the case and 10 of them directly took part in the killing. “All the accused hail from Rangareddy and Nalgonda districts. We have recovered four swords from them,” he said. A hunt has been launched to nab the seven others — Nayeem, Raheem, Ragula Naresh, Krishna, Pasham, Lingam and Veeramalla Ravi.

Sources said Suresh wanted to set up a footwear shot in Nalgonda but did not have finances. It was at this stage Nayeem came in contact and offered to give the money provided he carried out the plan to kill his rival, Sambasivudu. Sources said through a mediator, Nayeem even paid Rs 1.6 lakh as advance.

Nayeem and Sambasivudu were always at war with each other to gain upper hand in Nalgonda district affairs. Speaking to newspersons, Suresh admitted taking Rs 5 lakh from Nayeem to kill Sambasivudu. “We were also upset with Sambasivudu as he was harassing our family in Nalgonda,” he added. TNN
