Governor calls for awareness on blood donations

Hyderabad: Governor ESL Narasimhan on Thursday, the eve of World Blood Donor Day, called upon all the institutions, both government and private, to actively participate to create awareness on voluntary blood donation to save the lives of many.

Speaking at a function organised by the Indian Red Cross Society, (IRCS) at Durbar Hall of the Raj Bhavan, Mr Narasimhan said that the educational institutions play a vital role and the Vice Chancellors of the universities should take initiative to involve the students to participate in this programme.

He commended the services of the Indian Red Cross Society and said the Society is supplying about 30 per cent of blood required annually in the State.

He asked the officials not to compromise on the quality of blood.

IRCS Chairman Justice A Laxman Rao welcomed the gathering and said the theme of the world blood donor day 2011 is “More Blood, More Life”.

The theme reinforces the urgent need for more people all over the world to become life savers by volunteering to donate blood regularly, he said.

Earlier, the Governor gave away awards to the institutions who have donated blood under various categories like Education – Gokaraju and Rangaraju Engineering College, HSBC (IT Sector), AP Police Academy (Govt Dept,) Ayyappa Seva Samithi (NGO), Eenadu Group (Media), Reliance Communications (Single day highest blood donation).

KVG Raju of Kapra who has donated blood 58 times so far, was awarded under individual blood donor category.(INN)
