Gun Park fencing: Telangana advocates move SHRC

Posted by on August 5, 2011 0 Comment

The Joint Action Committee of Advocates moved the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) against the fencing around Gun Park, a memorial ground for those who died in the Telangana agitation in 1969. The fencing was undertaken by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the police recently.

The petition was filed by co-convener of JACA T Sriranga Rao in which he stated that the GHMC along with the police had put two iron gates and a barbed wire around the memorial about a fortnight ago. He said that Gun Park was a public place and that the municipal body violated the freedom of expression and liberty with this fencing. The decision to fence Gun Park was taken since it had become a preferred place for holding protests and dharnas by Telangana supporters. The petitioner stated that the park was constructed in the memory of more than 600 students who died fighting for Telangana.

In the petition, the lawyer alleged that this was a step to suppress the Telangana movement as the place was ‘pious’ for every T resident. The SHRC commissioner has called for reports by the GHMC commissioner and the commissioner of police by August 16. TOI
