Hyderabad:The ICET candidates, who furnished their mobile numbers in their application forms, were facing headache of SMSes and phone calls from various educational institutions, which were not even affiliated to any university or recognized by the UGC.
In the ICET-2011 application form, a column of cell phone number was incorporated for sending information promptly to the applicants whenever necessary. After announcement of ranks of ICET by the Andhra University, the ICET rankers started getting a number of SMSes and phone calls from various private educational institutions to join them. The callers were chasing the candidates to respond to their call. The candidates were also getting SMSes even from fake institutions. Moreover, the ICET candidates were getting phone calls from private computer training institutes. The ICET candidates lamented that the callers were killing their time by explaining about their courses and inviting them to the institutes for demo session.
When asked how they got their phone numbers, the reply is simple, “My executive has managed to get the information from the ICET examination authorities. They lamented that though the authorities have responsibility to protect privacy of the candidates by not revealing their phone numbers to others, they colluded with the private colleges and institutions and revealing the names and cell numbers of the applicants to them for obvious reasons.
To check the unwanted phone calls like telemarketing, the TRAI had introduced DND (Do No Disturb). The penalties prescribed in the DND should also be made applicable to such calls, they added.
