Hyderabad, Feb.12 (NSS): Stating that the unanimous resolution adopted by the State Legislature seeking SC status to the Dalit Christians during the regime of the late Chief minister, Y S Rajasekhar Reddy has still been pending with the Centre, the State president of the Indian Dalit Christian Rights, Mr Perike Vara Prasad Rao has demanded that the MPs and Ministers from the State to exert pressure on the UPA government to get a Bill introduced and passed in the Parliament. He also said that they would hold a dharna on February 25 in front of the residence of the UPA chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi in Delhi to get their rights in a constitutional way.
Speaking to the media here on Saturday, Mr Vara Prasad Rao said that the UPA chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi has been adopting anti-dalit policies, and also lacks commitment in connection with the woes confronting the dalit community. He demanded that the dalit christians should be recognised as SCs by bringing in an amendment to the 1950 Presidential Order. Reminding that reservation had been provided to the converted dalit Sikhs and dalit Buddhists in 1956 and 1990 respectively, he noted that the former prime minister, late P V Narsimha Rao could not fulfill the promise of recognising the dalit Christians as SCs, though he gave an assurance in this regard. Hence, he demanded both the Centre and State governments to recognise the dalit Christians as SCs.
Mr Vara Prasad Rao said that there were about 30,000 Christian aided posts in the State and demanded that these posts should be filled up with eligible candidates immediately. He also demanded that the reservation for the dalits should be increased from the present 15 per cent to 30 per cent. Referring to the SC and ST Commission, he said that it has been without the chairman over a long time and demanded for the appointment of a chairman immediately. He said that adequate priority must be given to the 90 lakh dalit Christians from the State in MP, MLA and MLC posts.
An amount of Rs 100 crores should be released towards the State Christian Finance Board, Mr Vara Prasad Rao demanded, and also added that all the scholarships and fee re-imbursements for the dalit Christian students should be released. Reminding that notwithstanding 16 courts allotted in the State for the dalit Christians, he said that not a single court has been established as yet. Hence, he demanded for the fulfillment of this assurance.
The City president, Mr Shyam Babu, the State secretary, Ms Veena and the State Executive Committee member, Mr Petla Bhushan Kumar, were also present. (NSS)
