Hyderabad: Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Sunday approved the construction of ‘Indira Kranthi Patham’ Bhavans in 1089 Mandals in the State, in line with an assurance he had given earlier.
The IKP Bhavans would be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 272.25 crore, with each building costing about Rs 25 lakh.
The Chief Minister’s Office said that the decision to construct the Bhavans has been taken in recognition of the IKP’s key role in organising the rural poor into the Self Help Groups.
“Andhra Pradesh is the role model in organising the rural poor into Self Help Groups under the name of Indira Kranthi Patham, wherein more than 1 crore rural poor households have been organised into a 10 lakh SHGs, which are further federated at the Village and Mandal level,” a statement from the CMO said.
“It may also be recalled that in the history of Andhra Pradesh, IKP groups, for the first time purchased 20 lakh metric tonnes of paddy from farmers through market intervention scheme and created a record. Usually, every year, IKP groups purchase only 3 to 4 lakh metric tonnes of paddy,” the statement continued.
The CMO added that it was in this context, that the Chief Minister took a bold decision by proposing an IKP group leader and SC woman A Lakshmi Siva Kumari as MLC to the Elders House (Legislative Council) from Governor’s quota, who hails from a remote village of East Godavari district to give representation to one crore IKP women.
The CMO further pointed out that the SHG groups in Andhra Pradesh have accessed Rs 7024 crore from banks as SHG-Bank linkage during 2010-11 and are set to access Rs 9024 crore during 2011-12.(INN)
