A 16-year-old student of Narayana Residential Junior College in Madhapur committed suicide by hanging at his hostel room on Wednesday morning.

Though the incident happened in the morning, police were not able to shift the body from the college till late in the evening as the teenager’s relatives were staging a dharna at the educational institution alleging that the student was forced to end his life due to harassment by the college staff.

The victim was identified as K Sai Kumar, 16, an Intermediate first -year (BPC) student of Narayana Residential Junior College in Gurukul Society, Madhapur. Sai Kumar, a native of Bellampally in Adilabad district, was the only son of Bellampally marketyard chairman Ramchandar.

Sai Kumar was found hanging in his room’s bathroom on the fourth floor of the college hostel on Wednesday morning by other students.

Everyday, all hostel students have study hours in the morning from 6.30 am to 8 am. At 7.55 am, just minutes before the study hours got over, Sai Kumar took permission from his supervisor to go to the rest room. After the study hours, Sai’s roommates went to the room and found the door of the attached bathroom locked from inside. As there was no response from Sai, his friends alerted the college management. The college staff forcibly opened the door and found Sai hanging from a ventilator with a towel, Madhapur sub-inspector (SI) Suresh told TOI.

In a suicide note found in his room, Sai reportedly wrote “amma amma amma” in Telugu, the SI said. Following the incident, Sai’s family members staged a protest in front of the hostel building and damaged furniture and window glass panes, demanding police arrest those responsible for the death. Later in the evening, state human rights commission’s representatives visited the college and recorded the statements of students and the family members.

The family members told police that Sai had secured 9.7 GPA (grade point average) in the recently announced Secondary School Certificate (SSC) results and took admission at the Narayana College on May 15. According to police, the college was conducting a bridge course for the newly-joined students. During the preliminary probe, police found that Sai did not have dinner on Tuesday and told his roommates to leave him alone. Till late in the evening, the body was at the college and police were planning to conduct a spot inquest. No cases have been registered yet.
