Hyderabad: As expected, the diplomatic statement by YSR Congress Party president YS Jaganmohan Reddy on the contentious separate Telangana statehood demand has been seized as being in favour of the separate statehood demand by party leaders from the region, who began preparations for the Kadapa MP to undertake his Odarpu Yatra in the region.
“Mr Jaganmohan Reddy has made his stand clear on Telangana,” YSR Congress Party spokesperson Gattu Ramachandra Rao told media persons at Sagar Society, the party’s office at Jubilee Hills on Sunday.
“He has stated that the YSR Congress Party respects the Telangana sentiment,” the party leader said, hinting that this statement would remove the objections by Telangana protagonists to the Odarpu Yatra.
Mr Jaganmohan Reddy was on May 28, 2010 forced to call off his Odarpu Yatra in Telangana after violence broke out during the Yatra, leaving two students seriously injured. The Kadapa MP had to be taken under preventive custody and shifted to Hyderabad after protestors pelted stones at the started to pelt stones at the Congress supporters waiting to receive him.
This led to a clash between Congress supporters and the separate statehood activists. The police had to open fire to control the clashing groups. Since that incident, Mr Jaganmohan Reddy had undertaken the Odarpu Yatra in Seemandhra districts.
Mr Ramachandra Rao added that, “Mr Jaganmohan Reddy will go from door-to-door in Telangana soon and console the kin of those who died.”
The YSR Congress Party leader hailed Mr Jaganmohan Reddy for his words that carving out a state is a decision to be taken by the Centre and also hailed his advise that any decision on the separate statehood issue should be made while taking care not to hurt anyone.
Responding on MPs Madhu Yashki and V Hanumantha Rao’s statements that Mr Jaganmohan Reddy had adopted double standards on Telangana on the lines of Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu, Mr Ramachandra Rao said that they have no moral right to criticise the Kadapa MP as it is the Centre which has failed to announce its decision on Telangana.
Stating that YSR Congress Party is not against formation of Telangana, he advised Telangana Congress leaders to mount pressure on their party president Sonia Gandhi and the party High Command for achieving the separate state.
“Unable to solve the Telangana statehood issue, the Congress leaders are levelling baseless allegations against Mr Jaganmohan Reddy to divert the attention of the people,” Mr Ramachandra Rao said.
He advised the Congress leaders not to drag Mr Jaganmohan Reddy into the issue.(INN)
