Hyderabad: Noted academician and MLC, Mr Chukka Ramaiah has said that an inquiry with a sitting High Court judge should be instituted to look into the issue of desecration of statues on the Tank Bund during the Million March, organized by the Telangana political JAC, on March 10.

Mr Ramaiah released a book “Virugudu” at the Pothana statue on the Tank Bund, here on Wednesday. The book is a 356-page compilation of essays by poets, literary figures and experts in several fields about the desecration of the statues on the Tank Bund and the cultural dominance of Seemandhra rulers. Regretting the desecration of statues, he said that though several movements have taken place over the last 60 years, never had such unfortunate incident taken place.

The convener of Telangana Journalists Forum, Mr Allam Narayana said that the desecration of statutes was a result of continuous destruction of the culture and civilization of Telangana over the last 60 years. He also said that they neither lament nor care for the incident since as many as 600 students sacrificed their lives for the cause of separate Telangana State.

The Telangana Political joint action committee convener, Prof. M Kodandaram said that erection of statues in rock structures had been opposed by many people right from the beginning since they were not safe at all. He also reminded that an engineer, Mr Krishna Rao had even approached the High Court against the statues. He also noted that it was the responsibility of the State government to look after the security of the Tank Bund. The government should not be in a hurry to reinstall the statues again, as they might meet with similar fate, he said and also added that an in depth discussion should be held on maintaining a balance between the regions while erecting the statues.

The Telangana Rachaitala Vedika general secretary, Mr Juluri Gouri Shankar, Bharatiya Janata party senior leader, Mr B Dattatreya, the Telangana Jagruthi chairperson, Ms K Kavitha and TRS party MLA, Mr Harish Rao, also spoke on the occasion. (NSS)
