Hyderabad: Violence marred the collectorate siege agitation by YSR Congress activists to highlight the plight of farmers in the state on Monday. Members of the Kakatiya University Joint Action Committee (KUJAC) and Telangana JAC tried to foil the dharna by YSR Congress activists demanding that the party first clarify its stand on separate Telangana state.
This led to dispute between the two sides and a police lathicharge. Dozens of KU students were arrested and taken to various police stations. YSR Congress activists began their dharna at Collectorate junction in the afternoon demanding relief for farmers. At the same time, KUJAC members reached the YSR statue at collector bungalow and removed YSRC flags while raising pro-Telangana slogans. On seeing this, furious YSR Congress supporters rushed to the spot and tried to attack the students.
A free-for-all prevailed for some time with both sides attacking each other even as slogans rented the air.
At this juncture, the police led by Hanmakonda DSP, Mr Venkatram Narsaiah, and the Jangaon DSP, Mr Nagaraju, resorted to a mild lathicharge to quell the clashing groups forcing YSRC activists to withdraw to the tent erected at the dharna site. Police then turned their ire at the students who were still in a belligerent mood. They began to beat up the KUJAC members resulting in a student falling unconscious. Deccan Chronicle
