Hyderabad: The state police can now finally hope to bring those accused in the Lumbini Park blast case —Anique Shafique Sayeed, Akbar Ismail Chowdhari, and Sadiq Israr Shaik — all currently in Sabarmati jail, to book. Another accused, Farooq Sharfuddin Tarkash, is in Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail. They are also named in the unexploded bomb case and the Gokul Chat Bhandar explosion at Koti. Riyaz Bhatkal, Iqbal Bhatkal, and Amir Reza Khan are believed to be involved in all three cases and are absconding. An Interpol red corner notice is pending against them.
Charge-sheets were filed by the Octopus Force and the cases are being tried by the Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge in Nampally. But the accused have not been produced in the court since 2009, when the Gujarat government issued an order on October 27, 2009 stating that the accused persons shall not be moved out of the central prison in Ahmedabad. Some of the accused then moved the Supreme Court. Cases are pending against them in Gujarat, Maharashtra, AP, Rajasthan and Karnataka.
Gujarat, Maharashtra, AP and Rajasthan told the SC that they have set up special courts to speed up the trial. Gujarat has assured the apex court that whenever it is necessary, and with proper warrants by any of the special courts, the accused can be moved out of Ahmedabad to be present in courts elsewhere. Following this, the SC has disposed off the petition. Deccan Chronicle
